Why the new Freebox Ultra is already a “must-have” on the day of its release

We didn't see it coming although a mysterious launch was in the air. But as Free celebrates its 25th anniversary, we expected a little something special from the operator. And the news fell this Tuesday, December 3. Free is launching a limited edition of its Freebox UItra Internet box.

A red box with LEDs inside

You can't miss it: the box appears in a translucent red dress. And Free doesn't hide it, this aesthetic bias is there to recall the iconic devices of the 90s such as Apple's iMac G3 or Nintendo's Game Boy Color. Little extra: inside, a luminous LED strip that can be configured from an application offers six animations: static, breathing, rain, wave, organic and dowel. It's already Christmas: it's going to sparkle in the cottages!

The most powerful box

Technically, no surprises though. The limited edition Freebox Ultra remains on paper the most powerful operator box on the market. Wifi 7, it offers a symmetrical speed of 8 Gbit/s and is accompanied by a Free 4K Player, a Wifi 7 repeater, and a Pocket Wifi 4G for traveling. During its launch in January 2024, Xavier Neil, the boss of Free, made an impact by presenting “the sick offer, never before seen” around his box.

Available from December 3, the Freebox Ultra Limited Edition is offered to new subscribers, but also to those who already have the Ultra and Ultra Essential box who can exchange their equipment. According to the site universfreebox.com, Freebox mini 4K Revolution, Delta and Pop subscribers can also claim the pretty red box in their living room for 49 euros in migration fees. Anyway. It remains to be seen how many pieces of this “limited edition” Free intends to market… so that it effectively remains limited!
