Speaking at a press conference during the 7th Marrakech International Film Festival (MIFF), Bellucci described Morocco as a showcase for both local and global emerging talent through the festival, which celebrates artistic diversity in its entirety.
“It’s an honor for me to take part for the third time in this wonderful Festival that brings together the greatest names in cinema from all over the world,” she enthused.
Referring to her documentary film Maria Callas, Monica Bellucci: An Encounter by Greek director Yannis Dimolitsas, screened on Sunday as part of the Festival’s 11th Continent section, she noted that the film recounts “the meeting of two souls and follows the work of an actress seeking to perfectly embody a character.”
“When I discovered the letters of the great opera singer Maria Callas, I was deeply moved by her powerful words, her vulnerability and the disarming sincerity that emanated from them. It made me want to share these fragments of life with the public,” she commented.
The film portrays an artistic adventure embarked upon on stage, where Monica Bellucci magnificently embodied the role of Maria Callas, highlighting her career, as well as her moments of glory and weakness. With this documentary, she continues her commitment to preserving the poignant legacy of this famous Greek soprano.
Referring to the scene in which she wore a Moroccan caftan, she noted that this traditional Moroccan garment is “a symbol of femininity and great elegance.”
Held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the 21st Marrakech International Film Festival continues to solidify its position as a must-attended cinematic event and a true moment of exchange and inspiration, illustrating the richness and diversity of film in all its splendor.
