Budget 2025: the moment of truth for Michel Barnier
It was an open secret, it's now official. After long weeks of discussions, Michel Barnier engaged, on the basis of article 49.3 of the Constitution, the government's responsibility for the Social Security financing bill.
“We have now reached a moment of truth which confronts everyone with their responsibilities. It is now up to you, deputies, parliamentarians of the Nation, to decide whether our country adopts responsible financial texts, essential and useful to our fellow citizens. Or if we enter unknown territory”declared the Prime Minister before the National Assembly. “The French would not forgive us for preferring particular interests to the future of the Nation”warns the resident of Matignon, who claims to have been “at the end of the dialogue” with the different political groups.
LFI and the RN file motions of censure
As a reminder, this provision, used for the first time by Michel Barnier since taking office, allows adoption of the text without a vote but exposes the government to a motion of censure. However, in the process, France Insoumise announced that it would file such a motion of censure. “We will censor this government”launched Mathilde Panot. Same story on the RN side. While the executive has increased its actions towards it in recent days to try to tip the scales, the far-right party has indicated that it “will vote for censorship”. “We will vote on this motion of censure and first of all ours”confirmed Marine Le Pen. “Mr. Barnier did not wish to respond to the request of the 11 million voters of the National Rally. He said that everyone assumes their responsibilities, so we will assume ours”she added.

The text of the New Popular Front (NFP) could therefore collect more than 300 votes, knowing that 288 are a priori necessary for it to be adopted. If necessary, the Prime Minister will have to resign, which will lead to the fall of the government. The vote is due to take place on Wednesday December 4.
