He will realize a “childhood dream”: A few months after leaving the Comédie Française, Laurent Lafitte will play in The Crazy Cage – musical comedy version – from December 2025, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, announced director Olivier Py to Le Parisien, Monday December 2, 2024.
The actor will play the role of Zaza, made famous by Michel Serrault in the play and then the film written by Jean Poiret in 1972. And Olivier Py will obviously be at the helm of this adaptation of the musical created in 1983 on Broadway.
A shared dream
The new director of the Théâtre du Châtelet reveals to Le Parisien that the project was born in December 2022, on the set of his film The imaginary Molière. Laurent Lafitte, his main performer, confided to him that he dreamed of playing in The crazy cageto which Olivier Py replied that he dreamed of directing it!
“I imagine it as a big family show, for Christmas. It’s great, intelligent, profound entertainment,” enthuses Olivier Py, who deplores that the French have “a little shunned musical comedy” despite the success of the play and the film.
Zaza is a central character
The musical is very different from the original play, he explains: “There is the Moliéresque framework, the situations, some characters but not all, and a text which is not at all that of the Crazy cage “. And the character of Zaza is much more developed there, according to BFMTV.
Our “Musical Comedy” file
Character into whose skin Laurent Lafitte should easily slip, even in a musical: the former chameleon actor of “Français” in fact studied, in his youth, singing and dancing at the Guildford School of Acting in London.
