United States: Joe Biden pardons his son, Hunter

A few months before leaving the White House to make way for his successor, US President Joe Biden pardoned his son. Hunter Biden was waiting to learn the prison sentences imposed on him for tax evasion and illegal possession of a firearm.
In a statement from the White House, President Joe Biden announced that he had pardoned his son, Hunter Biden. The latter was found guilty of tax evasion and illegal possession of firearms, two cases in which he risked 17 and 25 years in prison respectively.
On several occasions, Joe Biden had promised not to use his status to pardon his son. In his press release, the outgoing president recalls that the accusations linked to his son's legal affairs “emerged […] after several of my political opponents in Congress were the instigators to attack me and oppose my election”. This decision once again calls into question the independence of American justice.
