story of a terrible evening for Fiorentina and Italian football

The 14th day had a very tempting display on Sunday afternoon. Inter Milan, defending champion and well positioned in the race for the Scudetto, traveled to the beautiful region of Tuscany to challenge the surprising Fiorentina of Raffaelle Palladino who is having a fantastic start to the season with this beautiful 4th place in Serie A and 6th position in the Europa Conference League. It was a life-size test for Moise Kean and his teammates in great form. Unfortunately, what should have been a great game of Calcio turned into a real nightmare. This meeting took a rather dramatic turn after a quarter of an hour of play. Indeed, the Italian international hopeful midfielder, Edoardo Bove, collapsed on the pitch at the Artemio Stadium – Franchi: “The match will not resume and is postponed to a date to be determined. When play was interrupted, Bove collapsed to the ground and the situation immediately looked very serious. An ambulance took the player away, news is awaited”wrote Lega Serie A in an official statement sent to the press. Several hours of terror followed in Italy.

A terrible scene

In the 17th minute of the match, Edoardo Bove, who had just changed his jersey after a blow and indicated to his staff that he was not feeling well, bent down to tie his shoelaces, before getting up, doing a few steps then collapsing unconscious on the pitch of the Artemio – Franchi Stadium. Inter Milan players Denzel Dumfries and Hakan Çalhanoğlu were the first to alert doctors and referees, providing emergency medical treatment to Bove. The two Nerazzurri players were joined by Robin Gosens and Danilo Cataldi. It was the latter who put his teammate in the side safety position and who stuck out his tongue to prevent him from choking. Very quickly, players from both teams surrounded Edoardo Bove who was no longer reacting to the ground. Furious, Fiorentina defender Luca Ranieri had an altercation with a member of the medical staff, demanding faster intervention to help his friend. The young viola prodigy, Pietro Comuzzo, burst into tears before being consoled by Alessandro Bastoni. Andrea Colpani was also in tears. Dodô moved away from the scene for fear of witnessing something terrible.

Most of the Fiorentina and Inter players understood the gravity of the moment and immediately placed themselves around Edoardo Bove and the doctors, acting as a shield and covering the sight of the 22,000 fans present in deafening silence. The referee of the match, Daniele Doveri, was on his knees, totally lost, while Federico Dimarco ran off under the Ferrovia bend where the ambulance was parked. Transported to Careggi hospital, Edoardo Bove was accompanied by members of the Tuscan club's medical staff. Several of his loved ones went to his bedside, including his Fiorentina teammates (Biraghi, Martinez Quarta, Mandragora, Terracciano, Dodô and Ranieri), the coach Raffaele Palladino accompanied by his assistants, the club managers, his family, his girlfriend, the mayor of Florence and the president of the Tuscany region. According to the press agency ANSAthe 22-year-old was quickly placed on emergency alert. Upon arrival at the hospital, Bove was breathing independently, with a stable heartbeat rate. Initially unconscious, he had regained consciousness and was awake. Edoardo Bove was subsequently subjected to a CT scan and cardiological examinations. Approximately 4 minutes passed between the moment of discomfort and transport to Careggi hospital.

Fiorentina comes out of silence

Obviously the reaction from Fiorentina was awaited throughout the evening. Players, journalists, supporters, managers, coaches… Everyone was hoping for good news: “ACF Fiorentina and the Careggi University Hospital announce that footballer Edoardo Bove, rescued on the field following loss of consciousness during the Fiorentina – Inter competition, is currently under drug sedation in intensive care. The Viola footballer arrived hemodynamically stable in the emergency room and the first cardiological and neurological examinations ruled out acute damage to the central nervous system and cardio-respiratory system. Edoardo Bove will be re-evaluated in the next 24 hours”was written in the missive published on the club’s website, adding in another tweet: “Fiorentina and the Commisso family thank our supporters, the clubs, the supporters and the entire world of football and sport for the closeness and sensitivity shown towards Edoardo Bove and his loved ones».

Several Florentine fans arrived in front of the hospital and wanted to put up a banner with the words: “Come on Edoardo, Florence is with you» on the wall of a parking lot in front of the emergency room. The city of Florence is marked by a real curse, having already experienced several tragedies in the past. Giancarlo Antognoni came close to death on the pitch after a clash of rare violence with opposing goalkeeper Silvano Martina in 1981. Davide Astori lost his life suddenly while he was taking a nap in Udine with his team before a league match in 2018. And just under a year ago, Fiorentina mourned the equally sudden death of general manager Joe Barone, minutes before kickoff sending a poster against Atalanta. Later in the evening, Fiorentina confirmed that the game against Inter would be postponed to a later date.

Multiple tributes in Italy

Inter president Giuseppe Marotta spoke to Sky Italia following the definitive interruption of the match between Fiorentina and Inter: “The leaders of Fiorentina went to the hospital. I spoke with Daniele Pradè (fiorentina sports director, editor's note) recently, I am here to provide support on behalf of Inter, to the world of football, to the family, to Fiorentina. The decision was spontaneous, in the face of a fact that we hope is not serious. We are a community and when situations like this happen, all players and the referee must be involved together. It was a spontaneous decision to postpone the match. We haven't touched on the subject of the calendar, the focus and thoughts go to Bove first. Tomorrow we will assess what are the situations linked to recovery”he declared. In a country still very marked by the sudden death of Davide Astori and the multiple medical consequences linked to doping, vagal discomfort and other heart problems are taken very seriously by football clubs in Italy, as evidenced by the extensive medical examinations which can sometimes cancel transfers like that of Kevin Danso to AS Roma last summer.

Throughout the evening, messages of support followed one another on the various social networks, starting with the Italian league, but especially the 18 of the 19 other Serie A clubs: “Come on Edoardo, we are all with you!», «Come on Edward»«We are with you, go ahead Edoardo!»… All the teams in the championship, apart from the promoted Como busy managing the live-live of a meeting of its women's team, had a thought for the young midfielder. But that's not all since many players also sent a word to Edoardo Bove. From Mario Balotelli to Marcus Thuram, including Ismaël Bennacer, Nicola Zalewski and Romelu Lukaku, the former AS Roma player was at the center of all attention in Italy this Sunday evening. His Fiorentina teammates also had a comment for their young midfielder, including goalkeeper David De Gea who tweeted: “God, please”as a thought. Italy is marked at the start of the week, but proud of the reaction of the players and teams in these dark moments.
