According to the pro-European Union opposition, the latest legislative elections in Georgia are marred by irregularities. But the ruling party rules out holding new elections.
On the night of Saturday November 30 to Sunday December 1, thousands of Georgian demonstrators protested against the government's decision to postpone discussions on membership of the European Union. Despite several consecutive nights of demonstrations, the ruling party rules out the holding of new legislative elections. This party has just won the last elections which took place at the end of last October. But the vote would be marred by irregularities, according to the pro-European Union opposition.
Breaking with this new government, the Georgian president, Salomé Zourabichvili, announced that she refuses to give up her mandate at the end of the year until new legislative elections take place. For its part, the European Union is demanding an investigation into what it describes as “serious irregularities” during the last elections.
