The reason for this disappearance: un protest movement against new medical transport prices which were offered to them by the National Health Insurance Fund.
For Thibault Lafontaine, vice-president of the Var Taxi Union, “if these tariffs are applied, taxis would see their turnover drop by 30 to 40%or even more in the provinces where medical transport can represent up to 100% of turnover”.
For taxi drivers – 522 in the Var – the survival of the profession is at stake. Mr. Lafontaine affirms: “half of taxi drivers would find themselves bankrupt or ruined because their license plate (editor’s note) will no longer be worth anything”.
Half of the Var taxis
As for shared transportation, “we already do it, but with the new system that they want to impose on us, some clients will spend 7-8 hours traveling for a 20 minute medical appointment“denounces the representative of Var taxis.
On this Monday morning, around half of the Var taxis responded to their union's call. 110 west of Toulon, 120 east.
And if the blocking of the Bandol toll did not work well, with motorists being asked to get out first, taxis are considering blocking the Toulon tunnel before going to demonstrate in front of the care centers in the Toulon area.
