Monitor FAQs
Hey, I’m , a hardware analyst focused on monitors, among other classes of PC and gaming gear. I’m ISF-certified, and I’ve spent years testing and evaluating gaming monitors for PCMag. I’m here to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about buying a new monitor on Cyber Monday.
Do Monitors Drop in Price for Cyber Monday?
Is the sky blue? Is the grass green? Does a monitor drop in price for Cyber Monday? Yes, yes, and yes. Some monitors can be expensive investments and can cost just as much as high-end graphics cards, but retailers usually offer significant discounts and can sometimes even include additional goodies like gift cards. In general, though, there’s no better time to buy a cheap monitor than Cyber Monday.
We always rate the value of monitors based on their MSRPs. So if you’re looking to upgrade, keep an eye on this season’s sales, which could turn a pretty good monitor deal into a great one.
Why Are Monitors So Expensive?
Not all are. Monitors can be expensive, depending on their size, resolution, and refresh rate—usually, the higher the numbers, the bigger the dent in your wallet. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t great cheap monitors out there. To find a good deal, you just need to understand what your use case is. Do you want a 4K OLED monitor…or do you need one? Remember that cheaper monitors often sacrifice I/O ports and other premium features to get the price down, so if you want to save money, you’ll have to make some compromises.
The upshot is that if you want a basic monitor that “just works,” you can easily find one for under $100.
Which Resolution Is Right for Me?
No matter the size of your monitor, the first thing you’ll want to know is its native resolution. Screen resolution is the number of pixels that can be displayed on a screen—the higher the number at a given size, generally the sharper the image. There are three common resolutions you’ll run into: 1,920 by 1,080 (also known as full HD, or 1080p), 2,560 by 1,440 (also known as QHD, or 1440p), and 3,840 by 2,160 (aka 4K, or 2160p). For everyday computing, 4K should give you the sharpest possible image and can enable more comfortable multi-window work with panels 27 inches or larger. But 1080p or 1440i will certainly suffice for most workaday use with panels up to 27 or even 32 inches.
However, gamers have additional factors to consider. Just because your monitor is capable of, say, 1440p or 4K resolution doesn’t mean all your games will run well at those resolutions. Remember that your GPU (mostly) and CPU (to a lesser extent, in concert with the GPU) determine if your game will run workably at 1440p or 4K, not just your monitor. It’s also important to remember that gaming monitors can do a lot more than your typical productivity monitor can. While a productivity-oriented monitor might feature a 4K native resolution, chances are it won’t offer anything that enhances game performance. Don’t expect AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync support on your everyday work monitor.
