In Bucharest, young Romanians mobilized against the extreme right and “the return to the past” – Libération

After the surprise success of Calin Georgescu in the first round of the presidential election, and while a recount is underway, demonstrators are trying to make their fears and anger heard.

This Friday evening, on University Square in Bucharest, the songs of the demonstrators mask a certain discouragement. This is the fifth day of mobilization against the Romanian far right, after the surprise success of independent candidate Calin Georgescu who came first in the first round of the presidential election. On the paving stones glistening with rain, a few hundred people responded to the call. Still in shock, Laura Basalic is present for the second time this week. “I felt the need to be close to others, and to unload my emotions”explains sadly the thirty-year-old, who “very scared” faced with the revival of ideas “fascists, ultranationalists and pro-Russians”.

On November 24, 2024, Calin Georgescu obtained 22.9% of the votes, thus ahead of the three favorites in the ballot. A vote of anger and protest against the traditional parties that have ruled Romania since the fall of communism in 1989. But also a victory for the ideas of this candidate, sovereignist, anti-abortion and sympathizer of Vladimir Putin. Tinted with religious mysticism, his speeches were inspired by the legionary nationalism of the interwar period, and the pronatalist ideas of the communist era.
