The Czech and the Italian won the first parallel giant of the season in Mylin, China, on Saturday. The Swiss remained behind.
Alpine snowboarders kicked off their World Cup season on Saturday with a giant parallel in Inner Mongolia for a change. And Ester Ledecká and Edwin Coratti showed that they still had it.
Asian athletes took advantage of their slight geographical advantage on the snow of Mylin: five of the eight finalists represented Korea, China or Japan. But it was two proven champions who ultimately won.
The Czech Ester Ledecká, who did not compete in a parallel giant last season to better concentrate on alpine skiing, came back in style. The Olympic champion in Beijing two years ago proved once again that she feels very comfortable on Chinese snow, as on all the others for that matter. She beat the Polish Aleksandra Krol-Walas, back in competition after a one-year break where she had a child. The Japanese Tsubaki Miki completed the podium.
Among the men, the Italian Edwin Coratti beat a Korean duo: Sangkyum Kim signed a first World Cup podium in front of his compatriot Sangho Lee.
The Swiss far from the mark
Ladina Caviezel, stopped by Ester Ledecká, finished as the best Swiss in the quarter-finals. The Grisonne, formerly Ladina Jenny, appears under a different name in the rankings this season after marrying her colleague Dario Caviezel this summer. Julie Zogg, the only other Swiss to qualify, was eliminated in the round of 16, while Flurina Neva Batschi and Jessica Keizer failed in the previous stage.
Among the men, neither Dario Caviezel nor Gian Casanova managed to qualify for the round of 16.
