The Zurich city police announced in the middle of the week that they were preparing for the derby on Saturday with “a lot of effort”. It was straight became knownthat the fans of FC Zurich want to meet at the meeting place of their opponent GC for their fan march. Now it becomes clear what the police meant by that: In an unconventional maneuver, they completely cordoned off the entire Josefwiese in Zurich’s District 5 on Saturday morning – it is traditionally the meeting place for GC fans.
In addition to a large contingent of city police, the Zurich cantonal police and the transport police are on duty for the derby on Saturday and also for the upcoming Derby Cup game on Tuesday. The city police are reacting to the risk of escalation that exists when the two fan camps meet. She spoke of an “enormous security risk” and banned fan marches from the Josefwiese to the stadium. Fans are advised to go directly to the stadium.
Fans move the meeting point
The hostility between the two fan camps had increasingly led to violent actions in recent weeks. These include attacks on bystanders, the hunt for GC fans and – when the two Zurich clubs faced each other for the last time in Zurich: Banner theft and the storming of an S-Bahn.
Following the police announcement, the FCZ fans adjusted their plans on Friday evening and announced that they wanted to meet at the Museum of Design tram station. So still in traditional GC territory. From there the big fan march followed towards the stadium.
GC then followed suit: The fans marched from Turbinenplatz – albeit in significantly smaller numbers.
