Can you be a successful music group and tour while defending the planet? After years of efforts in this direction and multiple comments on the importance of defending the climate, the group Shaka Ponk responded in the negative and made the radical decision to stop playing music.
This Saturday, November 30, 2024, the French electro-rock group launched in 2002 will give its final concert at the Accor Arena in Paris. Frah, one of the members of Shaka Ponk, spoke to l'AFP and “complex, psychological and emotional tension” on this subject of the environment which weighed in this decision to discontinue the group. “It’s a kind of failure in the sense that we don’t have a solution. And as long as there is no solution, we stop,” added Sam, another member of the group. A decision which more broadly questions the impact of the music industry on global warming.
A sign of growing concern
That a group of this magnitude radically chooses to stop music for ecological reasons is a first. And the sign that this concern is becoming more and more important. Before them, the Coldplay group had already made several strong statements and actions for more ecology. In 2019, the group explained that it was postponing its world tour to take the time to organize a “plastic-free” trip with a “positive impact” on the environment. Several artists have been addressing these questions for years, as have structures such as festivals, tour operators, or performance halls.
