Affair of little Emile: more than a year after his disappearance, a new twist gives hope but…

The case of little Émile, a 2 and a half year old boy who disappeared in July 2023 in Haut-Vernet (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, ), took a turn last March with the discovery of bones belonging to him. The objective now is for investigators to determine the causes, whether accidental or criminal, of the child's death. New elements could allow us to move forward…

As reported by RTL this Friday, November 29, two partial traces of human DNA were found after the analysis of Emile's bones and clothes. The research was carried out by the forensic hematology laboratory in (), which was seized of the case at the end of June. Our colleagues specify that these traces of DNA are foreign to that of Emile and those of his family. We also learn that they were found in very small quantities and that they are degraded. We then speak of “partial DNA traces”.

Et This is quite problematic: For DNA to be interpretable, so that we can compare it, we must find at least ten different characteristics.. For example, in order to be able to compare DNA to the automated genetic fingerprint file (FNAEG), you need at least 12 of these characteristics (…) The more the DNA found is degraded, the fewer of these different characteristics we find and the greater the possibilities of matches with other DNA. In fact, this greatly increases the range of people who could be suitable matches.

Traces of DNA linked to “contamination”?

RTL would also like to point out that it is “tquite conceivable that these two unknown DNA traces come from contamination.” Car “lhe clothes and bones of the little boy have undergone numerous manipulations, both when they were discovered by a hiker on March 30, but also during the first series of analyzes carried out by the IRCGN.“Finally, you should also know that”DNA is far from being the only element that judges and investigators work on“Indeed, they analyze”the environment where Émile's bones and clothes were found, but also telephony in the surrounding area.

As you will have understood, there are still many gray areas to be clarified in this matter. So, Emile's loved ones and family must be patient, before we can give them concrete answers about what happened to the little boy. If it is possible…
