Last June, an investigation was opened by the Paris prosecutor's office against Jean-François Copé. The mayor of Meaux is suspected of having used municipal vehicles excessively.
Jean-François Copé is in turmoil. According to information from Mondeconfirmed by the Paris prosecutor's office, the mayor of Meaux is the subject of an investigation. This concerns in particular a possible excessive and fraudulent use of municipal vehicles. The investigation, which was opened last June after a report from the anti-corruption association Anticor, follows the publication of a report from the Ile-de-France regional audit chamber (CRC) in October 2022. In this document, the financial jurisdiction responsible for verifying the accounts suspected the councilor of Meaux of possibly undue use of municipal vehicles since 1995.
The politician would in fact use this advantage excessively by mobilizing a service vehicle and two drivers for daily trips between the city of Bossuet and the 16th arrondissement of Paris, his place of residence. Back and forth which would also have been carried out without the authorization of the municipal council. According to CRC estimates, Jean-François Copé's two drivers, fuel and maintenance of the car would have cost on average 126,315 euros per year, between 2018 and 2021.
“I calmly await the progress of this verification”
Faced with the accusations, Jean-François Copé was forced to break his silence. The former budget minister assured that he “ignored” the need for a deliberation by the municipal council to benefit from a company vehicle. An error that he would have corrected in 2022, “of the” that he has “been informed”. “In this matter, everything is transparent, starting with me, and therefore, I calmly await the progress of this verification,” he reacted, comments reported by Le Figaro.
