Fasten your seat belts and head to Arte this Friday, November 29. The channel broadcasts the telefilm from 8:55 p.m. I won't let myself do this anymore (already available on arte.TV), first solo staging of Gustave Kervernwithout his alter ego Benoît Delépine with whom he had worked for the cinema Mammuth, The Big Evening or Louise Michel. In this enjoyable and surprising road movie, Yolande Moreau plays Émilie who, after burying her son, makes a big decision: to flee the dehumanizing EHPAD in which she was languishing. His escape is motivated by one objective: to find Cédric (Philippe Duquesne), the boy who had attacked her decades earlier, in middle school, and take revenge. This mediocre olibrius is only the first in the list of people that Emilie is going to correct. In this vengeful quest, she is soon accompanied by Linda (Laure Calamy), who also has some scores to settle! A more than successful TV film, crowned with the Directing Prize at the last La Rochelle Fiction Festival…
I won't let myself do this anymore : “We all have little humiliations that stick in our heads”Gustave Kervern explains what inspired him for this TV film
Télé-Leisure: I won't let myself do this anymore is your first solo production and your first fiction for television. This project must have particular importance to you, right?
Gustave Kervern : During the pandemic, I had a personal problem that led me to write what was on my mind. I then wrote two scenarios. The first one, this one, started from a very stupid idea. When I was little and I tried to climb the rope in sports class, I couldn't do it and everyone made fun of me. Thinking about it, I noticed that we all have little humiliations that stick in our heads, things that we should have done and didn't do. This is what led me to I won't let myself do this anymore.
Did you enrich the scenario with other real anecdotes?
Yes, for example the slipper bathtub in Emilie's character's apartment, which the owner refused to change. I took that back from what happened to my parents. This bathtub is theirs. My father fell in this bathroom. Today my 93-year-old mother still has to climb over the high wall to wash. But she doesn't want to make waves with the owner. This concerns me. Why do we let this happen? The title came from there.

In this TV film, there is also the hilarious appearance of Gervais Martel, the ex-president of the Metz football club. How did he get involved in this project?
I am an absolute football fan. I adore Gervais Martelhe is deeply human, who has a lot of humor. I wanted to meet him so one day, I went to The Evening Team, a show that I watch almost every evening. It was like a Christmas present to myself. I saw Olivier Menard [le présentateur de l’émission, ndlr] which I love and therefore Martel. I then asked him if he wanted to make a small appearance. He lives in Lens and as we were filming in the North, in Lens and Arras in particular, it was not far from his home. And there you have it. It made me laugh and so did he.
Your TV movie is full of little details hidden in the shots. For example, there is this scene where the cops played by Anna Mouglalis and Raphaël Quenard are in front of a hot drinks dispenser and in which there is lime tea, verbena… and fentanyl, a particularly powerful drug. Where does this idea come from?
I don't know ! With Benoît Delépine, we got into the habit of working on fixed shots. From then on, something must happen in each frame. Our job is to imagine a detail, a phrase, a sound in each shot. So when you film a coffee machine, you say to yourself “What crap am I going to put in there?” [Il rit] This is the added value! These little details are everywhere in the TV movie. It's a bit like the ladybug Gotlib !
You often say that you're looking for permanent bullshit. What does this mean?
It is a concept of life. Life can be a little hard. When I turn around and see all the stupid things I've done but also the films I've done, I say to myself “What a laugh I had!”
