Koodo offering some customers $60/100GB, $65/120GB 5G Canada/U.S. plans

Koodo customers might want to check their self-serve portal for possible plan upgrades ahead of Black Friday sales.

I took a look at my Koodo account and noted several plan options available to me beyond what Koodo is currently offering on its website. To put these special offers, listed below, in perspective, it’s worth keeping in mind Koodo’s current in-market plans include $34/10GB, $39/60GB and $44/80 (prices include autopay discount).

Here are the special offers (prices include $5 autopay discount):

  • $50/85GB 4G
  • $55/100GB 5G
  • $60/100GB 5G with Canada/U.S. roaming
  • $65/120GB 5G with Canada/U.S. roaming

Koodo caps 4G speeds at 100Mbps and 5G speeds at up to 250Mbps, though you can boost that to 500Mbps with the ‘Speed Boost’ perk. The plans also include one free perk, though perk options vary by plan.

Notably, Koodo is continuing its trend of restricting 5G access to existing customers through special plan upgrades like this. And while it’s nice to see Koodo offer plans with built-in Canada/U.S. roaming, it’s disappointing these offers are: a) limited to existing customers, and b) worse than other providers.

Freedom Mobile and Public Mobile (which is owned by Koodo’s parent company, Telus) both have $35/50GB, $45/75GB and $55/100GB 5G Canada/U.S./Mexico plans. To be fair, Freedom’s plans include a $5/mo credit for 18 months and a $5 autopay credit. Still, with either of them, you’d end up paying the same or less per month for a plan with better roaming and similar data.

Moreover, I’m in a bit of a unique position. I have a $49/75GB 5G plan from Koodo that I got during Boxing Week last year (it was cheaper, and then Koodo raised my price). I’m not exactly thrilled about the price hike and would really like to have a plan with Canada/U.S. roaming, so I’ll likely jump ship. I’m just waiting for Black Friday proper to see if any better deals come, but otherwise, I’ll nab a $35/50GB 5G Canada/U.S./Mexico plan from Freedom or Public and call it a day. If Koodo doesn’t beat that offer tomorrow, then au revoir ????.
