Claudio Ranieri: “I feared Roma’s collapse in the second half, but we kept attacking”

Recently appointed AS Roma coach Claudio Ranieri expressed his emotions at the press conference following the match against Tottenham Hotspur (2-2).

“I am satisfied with the boys’ performance. They gave everything they had. I am glad that the fans could see their team playing with desire, determination, and pride, never giving up on their goal. We made three attempts, and then found the right one at the end. This is what I like—when the team never gives up and tries to recover or see the result through to the end.”

“Honestly, I’m happy. When I say I didn’t expect the result, it’s because I wanted to see a response on the pitch to understand if the players grasped what I was asking from them. When I mentioned that I enjoyed the match against Napoli but was unhappy with the lack of reaction, today they responded with a punch for every punch, despite conceding a goal in the 5th minute. The team did not crumble and attempted to level the score time and again, delivering a good and vibrant performance against a great team.”

“I praised Postecoglou because he has assembled an attacking team that I admire. That is how you win the fans over. I want our supporters to know that we will always try our hardest. Frankly speaking, I did not anticipate such a match. I feared a collapse in the second half, but we continued to attack. Of course, we left some space for Tottenham, but we came to play against a great team. I witnessed a strong and determined Roma, and I believe that when we equalized, it was deserved and important as it crowned all the efforts of the boys,” Ranieri was quoted by Giallorossi.net.
