The Tbilisi City Hall has announced a tender for metro train procurement starting in 2026. The tender for metro train procurement includes purchasing 13 four-car trains and 9 five-car trains. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The total project cost will reach approximately €200 million, with each car priced slightly above €2 million.
Why Tbilisi Chose a New Strategy for Metro Train Procurement
In 2023, Tbilisi terminated a contract with the Russian manufacturer “Metrovagonmash,” part of the TMH holding. The decision stemmed from sanctions risks, which significantly increased procurement costs. The new tender for metro train procurement aims to avoid similar risks in the future and ensure stable development of the capital’s metro system.

Using international financial resources, including cooperation with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, will help achieve high project standards. The new trains will meet modern safety and comfort requirements, which will improve the overall quality of transportation.
Tbilisi City Hall believes the initiative will strengthen public trust in urban transport systems. Additionally, it will help reduce traffic congestion on the city’s roads, enhancing overall mobility and sustainability.
