The blow fell this Wednesday afternoon. At the social and economic committee in Limoges at Valéo, management announced 83 job cuts out of 225.

We expected it but not for so many people. Because our site still has activity, we have 50 temporary workers, we work overtime regularly. There is work and unfortunately we act as if there is none.

Frédéric Darfeuille, CGT secretary of the CSE Limoges

At the Limoges factory, we manufacture clutches, products destined to disappear with automatic automobiles. Their production costs are higher than in low-cost countries, 45% more expensive for heavy goods vehicles and 35% for automobiles.

The site is also affected by the Job Protection Plan. It has a significant deficit that Limoges would be expected to absorb. “The Limoges site has always been a profitable site. When there was the merger in June with the Amiens site which was in deficit, we too became a site in deficit. We were told that we had a negative margin”, explains Ouassim Bakrim, CGT union representative at Valéo Limoges.

But the concern for the unions focuses on the elimination of administrative jobs. There are 53 of which 13 are in research and development, which is a very bad sign.

This is what made us strong, our ability to innovate and release new products. It was a great asset and we think these measures will put our site at risk. We are very worried about the future.

Ouassim Bakrim, CGT union representative of Valéo Limoges

Valéo was established in Limoges in 1972. 50 years after the birth of Valéo, a factory was built in Limoges in the North Industrial Zone. It specializes in one technology: vehicle clutch friction.

In this factory, there is also a research and development center, because the company has often been a pioneer in the automobile market. The famous “BEEP” which sounds when reversing your vehicle is an invention of the equipment manufacturer. In 1991, he also invented the first ultrasonic sensors for parking assistance and in the 2000s, he developed Start & Stop technology.

In 2022, the group achieved a turnover of 20 billion euros. Valeo employs nearly 110,000 people across 184 production sites around the world. Since the Covid-19 crisis, the group has posted a loss of 28% of its turnover during confinement.

Today, the group announced 868 positions on eight French sites including two permanent factory closures, one in the region at La Verrière, another in La Suze-sur-.
