It could have been so beautiful. A strong Club Brugge could dream of winning at Celtic after a gift-wrapped lead, but still had to settle for a draw. But what if Skov Olsen had just taken that one chance?

Celtic’s logo is a four-leaf clover, but luck did not side with the Scottish record champion against Club Brugge.

In minute 26, the normally deafening home crowd fell completely silent when Carter-Vickers played a back pass into the empty goal. The American defender had not seen that Kasper Schmeichel was completely on the other side.

Unlikely.

Especially because blue-black had also received a gift-wrapped penalty from Aston Villa on the previous matchday. Those British are clearly already in gift giving season.

Anyway, it is certainly not the case that the lead of a strong Club was undeserved. With a bit of luck, the Belgian national champions would have scored the 0-1 earlier.

First, Jutgla placed just wide in the opening minutes, but a little later Skov Olsen’s sights were also just not sharp enough.

Carter-Vickers (un)fortunately did hit the mark.

22 and not 15

Club initially performed equally well and eagerly after the break.

Almost immediately after the restart, Maxim De Cuyper had a huge chance to make it 0-2, but “good old” Kasper Schmeichel pulled off a fantastic parade.

The Scots did not get further than a shot from Hatate. Although Joel Ordónez had to hang dangerously on the emergency brake – fortunately the Ecuadorian got away with a yellow card.

Two moments between minutes 58 and 60 would determine the further course of the game.

First, Andreas Skov Olsen had a golden opportunity to give Club a pleasant double bonus, but the Dane pushed high. He had always made these in top form.

Then Hatate did much better on the other side with an opportunity that was a lot more difficult. On the side of the sixteen, the Japanese first cut out Seys and then curled wonderfully into the far corner (1-1).

Sad for the Belgian national champion.

Just like Ferran Jutglà’s disallowed goal, about 20 minutes before the whistle. The Spanish striker was a foot offside and saw the 1-2 erased from the scoreboard – after that, such opportunities would not follow again.

It makes a world of difference for Club. Not 15th place in the provisional rankings, but 22nd. And 9 points would have been better than 7 to start the final triptych.

Blue and Black will have to perform at least once against Sporting, Juventus or Manchester City.

Why not bring some four-leaf clovers from Scotland?

END: 1-1

This will taste like a loss for Club Brugge – who controlled for a long time, but conceded a sudden equalizer on the hour mark. After that, our compatriots could no longer bounce back in the cauldron in Glasgow. And so Club misses an excellent opportunity to make a difference in the rankings.

There was much more in it for Club Brugge, which did not reach the level it was before the break in the second half.

Tom Boudeweel on Radio 1

An extra 4 minutes will be added.

It is not yet Talbi’s substitution. Club Brugge’s winger unnecessarily gives away a corner kick at a crucial moment. Fortunately for the Club talent. At first Ordonez clears the ball, later Hatate shoots the rebound wide.

Onyedika once again proves to be a tower of strength. If the Club midfielder can keep the focus, he is unyielding and unplayable. Just ask Hatate. The Celtic attacker dives into the large rectangle and wants to force a shot, but collides with the Bruges block of granite.

Changing of the guard

Both trainers realize that it will be an exciting final quarter. At Celtic, the Japanese tormentors Maeda and Furuhashi surprisingly have to leave. Their replacements are Adam Idah and stalwart James Forrest. Nicky Hayen sends Vermant and Talbi into the field in place of the duo Skov Olsen/Jutgla.

A new opportunity for Celtic. Substitute Bernardo Paulo cleverly cuts down Jashari on the edge of the large rectangle and connects with his left. Mignolet is transfixed, but sees the shot fly inches wide of the goal.
