Thanks to a 3-0 win at Dinamo Zagreb, Borussia Dortmund celebrated their fourth win in their fifth game in the premier class and is thus still at the top of the table.
Zagreb coach Nenad Bjelica made six changes compared to the 0-0 draw against HNK Rijeka in the Croatian league: Ogiwara, Spikic, Pjaca, Kulenovic (all bench) as well as Misic and Ademi (not in the squad) were replaced by former Mainz player Pierre -Gabriel, Bernauer, Rog, Pavic, Stojkovic and Kacavenda replaced.
Borussia coach Nuri Sahin decided to make just one change compared to the 4-0 home win against Freiburg. Groß replaced Ryerson (bench) at right defense. The recently injured Can and Guirassy were back in the squad, but initially took a seat on the bench.
Champions League, 5th matchday – Wednesday
First aluminum twice, then Gittens worth seeing
Borussia took the initiative right from the start and had a good chance to score early: Bensebaini headed over Zagreb’s keeper Zagorac and onto the crossbar after Anton’s cross (8th). As a result, BVB remained superior on the field, with Dinamo only occasionally making a few offensive pinpricks after counterattacks.
The only clearer opportunity for the Croatians came from former Mainz player Pierre-Gabriel with a powerful long-range shot (16th). As the first half progressed, Borussia remained the dominant force: after a one-two with Sabitzer, it was Malen who hit the top edge of the crossbar with a deflected shot from a tight angle (27′).
Once again the Dutchman failed from close range in the final phase of the first half due to Zagorac’s strong reaction (41′). A few seconds later, Gittens took the lead for Dortmund after a short solo, which was both worth seeing and deserved (41′).
Bensebaini heads in effortlessly, Guirassy ice cold
After the break, Sahin brought in right-back Ryerson for the injured Brandt, while Groß moved into midfield. BVB made the preliminary decision early in the second half: Bensebaini headed in an unmarked corner to make it 2-0 (56′).
After that, little happened at first, especially since the Croatians, despite all their efforts, hardly created a goal threat and BVB switched a little into administration mode. The exception was the 65th minute, when Zagorac once again made a strong save against Malen. In the end, it was up to Joker Guirassy to make the final score 3-0 after a heavily deflected through ball from Schlotterbeck (90′).
Dortmund plays in the top game against Bayern on Saturday (6.30 p.m.). On the next matchday of the Champions League, BVB welcomes FC Barcelona (Wednesday, December 11th, 9 p.m.). Zagreb meets Celtic Glasgow a day earlier (6.45 p.m.).
