Mohamed Salah has emerged as the talk of the town in recent days owing to his exploits on and off the pitch for Liverpool.
He was the star of the show against Southampton as his second-half brace gave Liverpool a 3-2 win and took them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
However, it is something the Egyptian did after the game that took everyone by surprise.
In a chat with reporters outside St Mary’s, Salah confirmed that he was disappointed with Liverpool for not offering him a new contract, adding that he’s more ‘out than in’ at Anfield currently.
And now, the agent who brokered the deal for John Heitinga to join Liverpool earlier this summer has appeared to blame Richard Hughes for the contract impasse.
Richard Hughes blamed for Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool contract woes
Heitinga was an addition to Arne Slot’s coaching staff at the start of the season and Rob Jansen was the agent involved in the deal.
The deal to bring the Dutchman to Anfield would have involved some negotiations, so the agent must know a thing about Hughes.
And it’s safe to say he doesn’t have too many kind words to say about the Liverpool sporting director as he described him as a person who is desperately devoid of emotions.
Speaking on the KieftJansenEgmondGijp podcast (via Soccernews), Jansen appeared to blame Hughes for the contract standoff with Salah, describing the stark contrast in their personalities as a defining factor
“He’s new to the club and one thing Richard Hughes doesn’t have is any sense of empathy. Zero. He’s a robot.
“I know that because I negotiated with him, for Heitinga. There’s zero feeling in him. That could be the reason. Especially with a player like Salah, who has emotion, has a different culture and is sensitive to warmth.”
What has Arne Slot said about Richard Hughes?
From his first day as Liverpool boss, Arne Slot has always spoken highly of Hughes, who joined the club earlier this summer as sporting director.
He was appointed by Michael Edwards after he returned to Liverpool as FSG’s Director of Football and enjoys a good working relationship with Slot.
“I have had a very good relationship from the start with Richard, which is one of the reasons why I loved to join the club,” said Slot via the Echo.
“I have talked about the fans and the players we have, but if the relationship with the sporting director is not the best you will not go — but it was the contrary of that because I had a good feeling from the start about the person and definitely about the professional.”
