VfB Stuttgart has to do without some of its fans in the Champions League game against Red Star Belgrade. Numerous ultras have decided to turn back after incidents at a border control.
VfB confirmed to SWR Sport that some buses had returned to Stuttgart due to searches and checks at the border with Serbia. This is supposed to be the organized fan scene – the so-called Ultras. The other organized fan trips have continued.
The reason was the brutal actions of the Serbian police, including naked checks and violence. This means that around 500 supporters will be missing from the planned 2,400 VfB fans. However, the exact background cannot yet be assessed, the club said.
Take off your clothes for the checks, otherwise use the baton
A VfB fan who was sitting in one of the buses told SWR Sport about the controls: Individual people were led out of the buses and into cabins. They had to undress completely for the checks there. When they refused, batons were said to have been used.
It should still be quiet around the stadium
In addition, the first riots are said to have occurred in Belgrade. Pictures of isolated fights can be seen on social media, especially in the old town. ARD employee Zoran Ikonic verified this to SWR Sport and confirmed that there had been attacks on VfB fans. The arrest of a total of 15 people has been officially confirmed by the Serbian police so far. It is not known how many VfB supporters there are.
VfB fans told SWR Sport that masked people – presumably Red Star fans – were/are out and about in the city and are said to be targeting Stuttgart residents. However, things should still be quiet around the stadium in the Serbian capital.
VfB had given its supporters several safety tips in the past few days – also because some of the Red Star fans were considered to be “seeking violence and belonging to organized crime”.
