Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso praised his player Florian Wirtz, after the German international scored two goals in his team’s 5-0 victory over Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Wirtz was named best player of the match for the fourth time in the current edition of the Champions League, after he led Leverkusen to return to the right track in their European journey, following a 4-0 defeat against Liverpool, and a 1-1 draw with Brest.
The Spanish coach expects that the German champion – who is ranked fifth in the table in the league stage of the Champions League, which includes 36 teams – will guarantee a seat in the next round, giving the player (21 years old) a greater opportunity to shine.
“We want to help Wirtz,” Alonso told reporters. We know how much impact he has for us, we need a good team to help him. This tournament is for him, and we hope that we can qualify for the next round. “Florian always wants to play big matches.”
Alonso hopes that his team can continue its good run in the German League, and regain the level that helped it win the local double last season.
However, the former Spain midfielder noted that there is still room for improvement in his team’s performance.
Alonso said about the next match in the German League: “We performed very well against Salzburg tonight. We want to build on that against Union Berlin, next Saturday, and maintain our level. There are still ups and downs. We weren’t great, but we weren’t too bad either, and I think there are still areas for improvement; “We can do it.”
