New signing Michael Olise impresses at FC Bayern. A former Munich player still has something to criticize about the Frenchman’s game.

Munich – Michael Olise’s record for FC Bayern in the Bundesliga is truly impressive. After eleven match days and as many appearances (as of November 26th) in Munich’s Allianz Arena and away, the 22-year-old Frenchman has already scored five goals and prepared three more goals for the German record champions.

Michael Olise from FC Bayern: Frenchman delivers in the Bundesliga

After Bayern’s 1-0 (1-0) win against PSG on Tuesday evening, the technically adept right winger also had two goals in five Champions League appearances to show for his work. Before this season, the Munich team transferred a reported 53 million euros to Crystal Palace for the French outside attacker in England. It is a proud sum, but one that the 1.84 meter tall striker dutifully amortizes.

Nevertheless, there was quiet criticism of the Frenchman from home. And from an FCB icon. Specifically: Olise got off to a good start at Bayern, praised Bixente Lizarazu in an interview t-online. However, he criticized: “That is not the case with the French national team.”

Bayern winger Michael Olise: Bixente Lizarazu wants to see more in the national team

To put it into perspective: Olise, who made his international debut on September 6, 2024 in a 1:3 (1:1) draw against Italy, has not scored an own goal or an assist in four appearances for the “Equipe Tricolore” so far. “We see in that he has great talent, good dribbling, good passing and finishing. But in France and in the French national team we expect more from him,” Lizarazu continued in the interview with the news portal.

The now 54-year-old played for Bayern between 1997 and 2004 and in the 2005/06 season and celebrated, among other things, the Champions League victory in 2001 with the Munich team. What’s more: Lizarazu, who was extremely strong in tackles at the time, had converted one of the penalties from the spot in the 6:5 penalty shootout in the final against FC Valencia.

FC Bayern: Bixente Lizarazu raves about the successes of French players

Looking at players like Franck Ribéry and Kingsley Coman, the Frenchman continued: “The story of French players and Bayern is a great and beautiful one. When a Frenchman goes to Bayern, I always expect him to continue writing and be successful.” The sentence reads like an order to Olise, who was born in the British metropolis of London, but was once sent on there as a young player by Chelsea FC . He then came to Säbener Straße in the Bavarian Isar metropolis via FC Reading and Crystal Palace. (pm)
