During the question session to the government in the National Assembly on Tuesday, November 26, the Minister of the Interior strongly opposed the proposed law to repeal the offense of glorifying terrorism.
“It’s scandalous. It’s shameful!” Tuesday, November 26, Bruno Retailleau strongly opposed the bill, tabled by La France insoumise, to repeal the offense of glorifying terrorism. If the left party considers that this offense is used “against freedom of expression”, for the Minister of the Interior, this proposed repeal is “a cynical, electoralist, clientelist calculation”.
“If this law were adopted, then this offense would be erased from all our rights. It's scandalous. It’s shameful”lamented the tenant of Beauvau, adding that it is “a serious moral fault”. “In France, the terrorism that struck has a name: it is Islamist terrorism”he insisted, referring to the 273 people killed on French soil since 2012 during terrorist attacks.
“Freedom of expression does not justify everything”
“You betray the republican heritage of the French left”continued Bruno Retailleau, recalling that the offense of glorifying terrorism had been voted on under the presidency of François Hollande, socialist president. “There will be a before and an after. LFI is not a party like the others”concluded the minister.
Didier Migaud also opposed this repeal. “I can only resolutely oppose this bill,” insisted the Minister of Justice. “Freedom of expression does not justify everything. No turning back is desirable in the face of the threat of terrorism”he assured. The Minister of Justice maintained that this offense is a “useful instrument to fight terrorism” and called the deputies “to retain this provision in the Penal Code”.
