Kansas City Chiefs right guard Trey Smith offered candid insights after the team’s narrow victory over the Carolina Panthers, addressing offensive line struggles, praising tight end Noah Gray’s rise and previewing Friday’s divisional clash with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Issues along the offensive line
Despite the win, the Chiefs’ offensive line allowed five sacks, a glaring issue Smith acknowledged.
“It’s just better recognition and being a better athlete in the moment,” Smith said. “Some of those plays came down to us needing to understand the situation better and making adjustments faster.”
He stressed execution, particularly in recognizing defensive stunts, as key to improvement.
“It’s on all of us up front to make sure we’re protecting better for [Patrick Mahomes].”
Facing a short week with Thanksgiving and a Friday game, Smith praised head coach Andy Reid’s preparation methods.
“Coach Reid does a phenomenal job of keeping us ready no matter the circumstances,” Smith said. “With the holiday season, you’ve got to watch what’s on your plate, literally and figuratively, and just stay focused.”
Smith highlighted the complexities of a second meeting with the Raiders, noting their familiarity with each other’s tendencies.
“It’s always a competitive battle with them,” he said. “It comes down to execution and making sure we’re locked in for all four quarters.”
Smith on Noah Gray’s recent success
Tight end Noah Gray has been a bright spot, scoring touchdowns in back-to-back games. Smith, who entered the league with Gray in 2021, lauded his teammate’s growth.
“To me, it’s not a surprise,” Smith said. “I’ve watched Noah since the Senior Bowl. He’s always been professional, taking his craft seriously, and working incredibly hard.”
Gray’s recent success follows a new contract, which Smith called well-deserved.
“To see him get rewarded financially and then back it up on the field is awesome,” he stated.
Looking ahead to Las Vegas on Black Friday
Smith remains confident in the team’s ability to adapt and improve as the Chiefs prepare for Friday’s showdown in Las Vegas.
“If we all do our jobs and stay locked in, we’ll accomplish our goals and keep building on what we’ve started,” Smith emphasized.
The Chiefs aim to tighten their execution and solidify their playoff positioning.
