Al Hilal of Sudan returned with 3 valuable points from Tanzania with a 2-0 victory over Young Africans to lead Group A in the CAF Champions League, benefiting from Mouloudia Algiers’ 0-0 draw with host Mazembe on Tuesday.
Adama Coulibaly scored the lead goal for the Sudanese team in the 63rd minute, after he raced towards the penalty area after a long pass from Tayeb Abdel Razek and shot a low ball past goalkeeper Djiji Diarra.
Substitute Yasser Muzamil added the second goal alone in the 90th minute after a pass from Abdul Raouf Yaqoub.
Al Hilal relied on counterattacks, and Young Africans failed to reach goalkeeper Issa Fofana despite shooting against the crossbar in the second half.
Yacoub wasted a dangerous opportunity in the 81st minute after he dribbled past goalkeeper Diarra, but he was late in shooting, before providing the decisive pass for the goal that secured the victory for his colleague Muzamil.
Mouloudia Algiers draws with Mazembe
Mouloudia of Alger kept a clean sheet to draw in the Democratic Republic of Congo in a match that did not witness many chances for both teams after Mouloudia of Alger relied on a defensive style of play to secure the result.
Mouloudia Algiers had their first chance after half an hour of play, when Andy Delort fired a shot that was blocked by the goalkeeper.
Mouloudia Alger called for a penalty kick near the end of the first half after a strong intervention on striker Delor, but the referee ordered the game to continue.
Mazembe’s performance improved after the end of the break, and they controlled the ball, but coach Patrice Baumel’s team succeeded in closing all the spaces in front of the host, returning with a point at the beginning of their African journey.
Al Hilal will host its rival Mazembe in the next round in early December, while Young Africans will visit Mouloudia Algiers.
