Based on the ballot box results, it seemed simple. Nu2960 won fifteen of the 31 seats (44 percent), N-VA ten (30.5 percent) and Vlaams Belang six (21 percent). The most logical and comfortable coalition: that of nu2960 and N-VA, with 25 of the 31 seats.
But that didn’t work. N-VA’s right of initiative to form a coalition in Brecht expired last Tuesday. Because no agreement was found, it was Vlaams Belang’s turn. That party has now concluded an agreement together with the party nu2960.
The Vlaams Belang party is undergoing a name change and will continue as Ons Brecht.
Second community
Brecht is the second municipality in Flanders where the cordon sanitary is broken. In mid-October it became known that a coalition had been found in Ranst, also in the province of Antwerp, between the local parties PIT and Vrij Ranst and Vlaams Belang. The extreme right-wing party chose the name ‘Ons Ranst’ and may supply the second ships. This has the powers of Finance and Spatial Planning.
In the West Flemish city of Izegem, a coalition with Vlaams Belang was in the making at the end of October. The intended coalition with STiP+, the winners of the local elections, and Vlaams Belang did not take place at the last minute because members of STiP+ dropped out “after threats”. It led to a demonstration in front of the town hall on October 31, attended by 800 Vlaams Belang sympathizers.
