A spectacular fire broke out this Monday, November 25, 2024 in a building located in the historic center of La Rochelle (Charente-Maritime). The fire was followed by a significant explosion in laundromat located on the ground floor of this building in the early evening, France 3 reported.
Although the majority of residents in this building were able to be evacuated in time, one woman found herself trapped by the fire and died following a cardio-respiratory arrest. She lived on the third floor of the burned building. The victim of this fire was aged 63.
45 firefighters mobilized
In order to contain this fire, 45 firefighters were mobilized. The two buildings located next to the burned building were also evacuated for safety reasons.
According to initial information, the explosion was caused by fire of the boiler. However, the origin of the fire remains undetermined at this stage.
Traffic was cut off on rue de Cordouan to allow firefighters to intervene in the best possible conditions.
