Storm 'Bert' has a positive impact on the Leonese countryside

The rains this Monday are going to contribute in a “very positive” way to the birth of cereal crops in the province of Leonthey affirm from Asaja Leon. The alwayss, which are about to be completed, were going through a drought situation that prevented this. The mild temperatures that have been recorded until now also contribute to this rapid birth and development of plants.

Asaja León details in a statement issued to the media this Tuesday that the planting campaign has been “generally good”, given that “there has been sufficient weather to carry out the different agronomic tasks of land preparation.” The lack of rainfall in recent weeks, however, had caused the most superficial layer of the soil to dry out excessively, making seed germination difficult, especially in stronger, clayey soils. “With the rainfall that fell on the night from last Sunday to Monday, around 15 liters per square meter depending on the areas, this problem is considered solved,” the organization explains.

In the province of León, some 105,000 hectares of winter cereals are planted, 25% of them on irrigated land. Also, now in the autumn months, about 13,000 hectares of vetches are planted for grain or forage, most of them on dry land. The rapeseed, of which about 6,500 hectares are cultivated, most of it dry, was sown between the second half of September and the first half of October, and looks good.

Asaja León has confirmed that dryland farms that were usually used for cereal are being stopped being planted, and that the reason is the high production costs and low grain prices. As a consequence of all this, the low expectations of obtaining profitability. These farms, with a total surface area not yet determined, will be left fallow or planted in spring with sunflowers, the latter crop entailing less investment and therefore less risk.
