León
Hundreds of people joined the demonstration this Monday in León for the International Day for the Eradication of Sexist Violence. With 531 complaints filed so far this year in León, a protection order issued every 48 hours in the province, the organizers of the march are clear: there is no reason to be optimistic or settle.
20 years after Zapatero approved the comprehensive Law against gender violence, they ask for substantial changes that improve prevention as well as protection for victims in all areas: from Education to Justice.
The motto of this demonstration was “Let shame change sides” and Encina Gutiérrez remembers that the finger pointing and guilt that unfairly affects victims is still very present, “especially in small environments” such as the province of León.
By the way, during the institutional event that took place this Monday, the mayor of León recognized that the new municipal ordinance on prostitution and trafficking in women could still be improved. The platform against sexist violence blames it for not having real consequences since no complaints have been made in the year it has been active. José Antonio Diez recalls that the city council was a pioneer in Spain in approving this regulation and is committed to continuing to deepen its application.
