In Wallonia, the Local Elections Council invalidated the October 13 vote for the commune of Celles, near Tournai. The municipal majority was decided by just seven votes, and 39 proxies were not counted. Residents will have to return to the polls.
The Local Elections Council announced on Monday that it had canceled the municipal elections in Celles, in Hainaut, due to “a number of irregular votes exceeding the tipping threshold”.
According to the Council, made up of five provincial governors and three experts, 22 proxies out of 215 did not meet, after analysis, the regularity criteria determined. However, 18 votes were enough to change the result of the election.
“The number of votes tainted by irregularity exceeds this tipping threshold“, underlines the Council according to which “the conditions were therefore met to pronounce the cancellation of the elections in Celles.”
On October 13, the list of outgoing mayor Michaël Busine (LB-OC) came out on top in the elections but missed the absolute majority by 17 votes. In the process, Les Engagés and Celles Demain announced a majority agreement. The two lists together have 9 seats, compared to 8 for the Mayor’s List.
The latter, as well as Celles Moment, had filed an appeal, particularly pointing to a series of disputed proxies. The Local Elections Council has just proven them right.
