In Romania, the meteoric rise of the far right

Far from all predictions, the independent pro-Russian and sovereignist candidate Călin Georgescu obtained 23% of the votes in the first round of the presidential election. He is in the lead ahead of the center-right candidate, Elena Lasconi (19%). A result which could be explained by its growing popularity on TikTok and anti-system speeches.

SIf a Romanian analyst says he is not shocked, that would be a lie. This is unprecedented in 35 years of democracy,” says Madalina Voinea, who analyzes disinformation for the Expert Forum think tank. Călin Georgescu, 62, a far-right candidate who was credited with less than 10% in the polls, rose meteorically in the first round of the Romanian presidential election, reaching 23% of the vote. With 2.1 million votes, he is 400,000 votes ahead of candidate Elena Lasconi, from the center-right Union Save Romania (USR) party.
