León calls for collective action against all violence against women in the joint event for 25-N

Within the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Parador de San Marcos has hosted a joint event between the Government Delegation in Castilla y León, the Junta de Castilla y León, the León City Council, the Provincial Council Provincial and the University of León.

An act that has highlighted the need for collaboration and cooperation between all public institutions to fight against gender violence, a great scourge in a 21st century society.

Héctor Alaiz, subdelegate of the Government in León, welcomed all the authorities and citizens who attended this event and thanked them for “the agreement that exists in León between the different institutions, in a single and common voice and in “a joint act that shows that there are reasons and causes that have a common feeling and pain.”

Subsequently, Nicanor Sen, delegate of the Government in Castilla y León, José Antonio Díez, mayor of León, Gerardo Álvarez Courel, president of the Provincial Council of León, Eduardo Diego, territorial delegate of the Junta de Castilla y León, and Nuria González, rector from the University of León have read an institutional declaration in which they have shown the unity of action against gender violence and against all violence against women.

Nicanor Sen was in charge of closing the event. During his speech he stressed the importance of denunciation, vindication, recognition and commitment in the fight against sexist scourge: “Today is a day of denunciation and vindication, but also of recognition towards those who fight to eradicate a form of unacceptable violence in a just society, and of collective commitment to build an egalitarian society, free of violence against women.”

Sen recalled that violence against women “has multiple faces”, emphasizing that they always end “in the same: that of the woman”. Since 2003, 1,286 women have been murdered in Spain due to gender violence, 41 during 2024.

This year, Castilla y León has recorded two fatalities, while in León no loss has been reported in 2024. However, the number of women under protection in the province's Viogen system reaches 915, of which 70 use telematic control devices to guarantee your safety.

Sen has announced that the Government's attention is also focused on Alicante, where “the investigation into a new alleged case of gender violence has begun in the last few hours.”

In his speech, he made a special call to men, urging them to be an active part of the solution: “It is not just an option, it is a duty” and not to be complicit through “actions or silence of this social scourge.” Sen has invited men to “unlearn machismo, question privileges and act actively to dismantle the structural violence that perpetuates this inequality.”

She also highlighted the measures promoted by the Government of Spain, such as the expansion of the ATENPRO service to cover all forms of violence against women and training strategies in public organizations. These actions seek to guarantee that anyone can receive adequate guidance in cases of gender violence. “In 2024 we have intensified legislative and social efforts, reflecting a comprehensive perspective that places victims at the center,” he added.

The Government delegate also highlighted the challenge posed by the low rate of complaints. More than 70% of the fatal victims had never reported it. “This underlines the crucial role of nearby environments. Every conversation, every gesture of support can make a difference,” he said, urging citizens to be an active support for the victims.

During her speech she also highlighted the need to support other victims of gender violence: minors, remembering that this year 30 have been orphaned and 8 have been murdered in acts of vicarious violence.

In her final words, Sen expressed her gratitude to the associations, security forces and bodies and the feminist movement: “Thank you for not giving up, for demanding more from us and for keeping the flame of equality alive.” To women who face situations of violence, the delegate addressed a direct and forceful message: “You are not alone. The institutions are with you.”
