An explanation of Călin Georgescu’s victory. Valentin Naumescu, about “the revenge vote and the campaign on TikTok”

International relations professor Valentin Naumescu said, in an intervention on Digi24, that there is a “combined explanation, with at least two factors” for Călin Georgescu’s victory in the first round.

Valentin Naumescu declared that “at this moment, we are crying with one eye and laughing with the other, because there will be a presidential final between Călin Georgescu and Elena Lasconi on December 8”.

I really lived an amazing night, a terrible night with this nightmare that appeared unexpectedly, a candidate close to Russia, supported, it seems, by Russia, not just close, who upset the Romanian political scene. He entered the final from first place, with over 2,100,000 votes. It is a result that, for sure, will require many explanations and clarifications, including from the state institutions, as to how it got here.

“The rematch vote and the very intense campaign on TikTok”

The professor explains how the independent candidate Călin Georgescu “appeared, practically out of the blue, at the beginning of the election campaign. It was somewhere, a few percentages, completely insignificant”.

Naumescu comes up with the explanation that there were at least two factors that led to Georgescu’s surprising victory.

An important part of the electorate expected an extremist candidate, a radical, sovereign candidate, an anti-Western candidate. And it happened that, in the last few weeks, practically, this electorate, which we knew was, initially, somewhere around 20%, changed its option from George Simion to Călin Georgescu. So there was an expectation, there was a desire for a revenge vote, a protest vote, on the part of people with many frustrations, with revolt, with anger towards the system.

Another important factor, taken into account by the teacher, is the “aggressive” campaign on the TikTok social network.

“It is a network that many of us miss, we do not use it, we are not present there, but it seems that it has a lot of users and some algorithms that were probably paid, financed or there was a certain procedure through which the name of this candidate was brought repeatedly, massively, in the last weeks, to the attention of many users”, said Naumescu.

“A large part of his voters don’t know exactly who he is”

According to Professor Naumescu, it seems that a large part of his voters do not know exactly who he is, but, receiving many messages, “being bombarded with these ideas, that he is a true Romanian, a strong leader for Romania, that he has a plan, that it has solutions, they came to believe this”.

“So it’s a well-thought-out procedure, but, I repeat, Tik-Tokul does not fully explain this result, let’s not overestimate this vote, not only because of Tik-Tokul did Călin Georgescu make it to the final,” says Naumescu.

Referring to the messages sent by Călin Georgescu that aimed at an anti-EU and anti-NATO policy and in the context of his possible access to the Cotroceni Palace, Naumescu said: “Forget it, we have to be honest. We did not follow these messages during the radar campaign, because we did not follow this candidate. He went somewhat under the radar, let’s say so, of the mainstream media in Romania, even of the opinion polls, of the analysts, I don’t think anyone followed him and didn’t treat him seriously and didn’t give him a chance for the second round. Now we start to see what he said in the campaign, what are the messages, so after he came out on top in the presidential election in the first round”.
