storm Bert causes damage in the Rhône

The passage of storm Bert in the Rhône caused significant disruption to road and rail traffic this Monday, November 25. In , large parks and cemeteries as well as the Christmas market remain closed.

The Rhône has been placed on orange “wind” vigilance for the day of Monday, November 25 by Météo- due to the “Bert” depression. The institute announces “sometimes stormy gusts from the Massif Central to Lyonnais”.

On the A47, the trailer of a heavy goods vehicle overturned this Monday morning around Ternay and caused traffic jams on the axis which goes from Saint-Étienne towards Lyon. According to Bison Futé, more than six kilometers of traffic jams are still in progress on the highway while a return to normal is expected from 5 p.m.

Gusts reached up to 110km/h last night. The wind continues to blow very strongly, gusts could reach up to 120 km/h in the region, particularly in Givors.

Around twenty firefighter interventions have been carried out for falling trees since the beginning of the morning, as shown in several photos on social networks.

Branches also fell on the overhead tram lines near Grange-Blanche, disrupting traffic on line T2 all morning.

Furthermore, the T3 and T7 tram lines have no longer been running due to bad weather since midday, resumption is estimated at 5 p.m., indicates TCL. Bus lines C1, C2, C4, C9 and C25 were also severely disrupted in the morning.

“The wind stops you”

By bike or on foot, vigilance is also required. “On the banks of the Saône, it was horrible. The wind stops you. I had never seen that,” says a passer-by in Lyon. “I'm going two an hour because we're treading water. I hope we'll have better weather conditions afterwards,” continues a cyclist.

Numerous disruptions are also underway in rail traffic. TER traffic to or from Lyon and to Givors, , , Saint-André-le-Gaz, Paray-le-Monial, Saint-Étienne and Montbrison is interrupted.

Rail traffic severely disrupted

The Le Puy-en-Velay-Saint-Étienne, Lyon Saint-Paul-Tassin-Lozanne-Brignais, Lyon-Saint-Étienne-Le Puy-en-Velay and Lyon-Roanne-Clermont connections are also interrupted. No replacement buses are in place on these lines. The connections linking Mâcon and Bourg-en-Bresse to Lyon are blocked only until 4 p.m.

The SNCF also announces the elimination of Intercités “to be planned” as well as a “reduction in services for certain TVGs” while the speed of trains “will be limited” on several lines.

Closure of OL Vallée until late afternoon

The OL Vallée leisure center is also closed “until the end of the afternoon due to weather conditions”, the group announced on X this Monday morning. Since this Sunday, Lyon's “large parks and cemeteries” have also been closed, the same goes for the Christmas market located at Place Carnot.

According to Météo-France, the winds should weaken at the start of the afternoon over the Massif Central and later in the day between Saint-Etienne and Lyon.
