“Putting the belligerents around a table”: Mike Waltz, future Trump adviser, aims for an arrangement between Ukraine and Russia

While Donald Trump will only take office in two months, on January 20, 2025, he already intends to influence the progress of the world. Mike Waltz, his future security adviser, said this weekend that his team wants to start working with Joe Biden’s administration to reach an “arrangement” between Ukraine and Russia. However, Mike Waltz is one of the rare people close to Donald Trump whose competence is not disputed. This could all be very serious.

Michael Waltz, known as Mike, 50 years old, is first and foremost an officer. A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, he fought in Afghanistan as part of the special forces. He has been a reservist since 2000.

Unlike many of Donald Trump’s minions, he is not a billionaire, just a millionaire. He earned $95 million by selling his military consulting company in 2020 which employed 400 people.

But he is also an experienced politician. He already served as security secretary for Vice President Dick Cheney during George W. Bush’s term. He has also been a Republican member of the House of Representatives from Florida since 2018.

It is therefore completely credible to talk about the war in Ukraine. However, guest of the Fox News channel, he declared that Donald Trump was very worried about the current escalation in the conflict.

An agreement between Ukraine and Russia?

The future president did not appreciate that Joe Biden authorized the Ukrainians to use long-range American missiles against Russia. Which immediately provoked a Russian response with a vector capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. It’s probably a bluff, but Putin is capable of anything.

However, Mike Waltz warned: “Our adversaries who think this is an opportunity to play one administration against the other are wrong.“. He adds that “the Trump team’s goal is to bring the belligerents to the table. For the moment, we do not know who will be around this table, whether it will be an agreement or an armistice, nor what the framework of an arrangement will be. But we will work on it with the Biden administration until January and we will continue after“.

Now the question is whether, once Trump is in power, the Americans will let go of Volodymyr Zelensky. If they are going to stop supplying him with money and weapons and force him to cede the territories conquered by Russia, nothing is less certain. In fact, all options are possible. One could even imagine that the Russian-speaking Donbass would remain officially Ukrainian, but obtain a status of broad autonomy. In diplomacy, anything is possible, but first a ceasefire must be established.

Other elements than military confrontation may come into play, such as competition between Russia and the United States on the global gas market. And then, of course, there is the red line: that Ukraine does not join NATO. As for joining the European Union, it is not certain that Putin is opposed to it. Especially if other Viktor Orbáns appear there.
