Unlike other candidates, Călin Georgescu did not have a campaign headquarters. After the polls closed, he went out to make statements alone, in front of a house in Izvorani, Ifov.
“I thank the Romanian people for their effort, sacrifice and responsibility. No matter who voted for me or not I will respect them, I will help them and respect and encourage them all. We are strong, we are brave, there were many to vote and we will also be many in the 2nd round. I thank them, we waited with confidence and devotion, it is clear that everything I said, we are not doing politics, we are making history, we will get there”, he declared Călin Georgescu.
He gained much of his popularity on the social network TikTok, where he collected millions of likes. He carried out an intense campaign on the Internet under the slogan “Remake Romania”.
Călin Georgescu is 62 years old, from Bucharest, an agronomist by profession and a doctor in pedology. He held positions at the Ministry of the Environment, at the National Center for Sustainable Development and at the UN.
It has been proposed to the premier several times, the first time in 2011. But also in December 2020 – from the AUR. In 2022, Georgescu was appointed honorary president of the AUR party, but the relationship with the leader of the group, George Simion, became tense. In September, he even accused Simion of secretly supporting PSD.
Călin Georgescu: A woman cannot be president
“Is Romania ready to have a female president at this moment?”, Călin Georgescu was asked in a podcast.
His response: “A woman? Not. Because the woman has another role in society, not that of president, she has no way to cope. Before the woman you must bow because she gives birth to the human being. To be on this fierce battle zone is no joke. Only a man, supported by a strong woman, can do that.”
He often made statements that qualified him as pro-Russian or even a representative of Moscow's interests in Romania
In January 2022, shortly after he was presented by AUR as honorary president of the party, Călin Georgescu published a clip on Facebook in which he says that Ion Antonescu and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu are heroes through whom “national history lived, through they speak and national history has spoken and not through the service lackeys of the globalist powers that today lead Romania temporarily”.
He later said on a television show that they “did good things and bad things, but generally a genuine leader is one who tells the truth, and if you don't tell the truth, you can't be leader. History has been mystified and there are many fabricated people, and power has been taken for money in the last period, in the last 30 years. Under this aspect, regarding the question, we have to keep a balance. There were good deeds and deeds that I cannot comment on, but historians must prove this. I can't have opinions about the martyrs, but they are from our history and remain in our history”.
Călin Georgescu: “I told you from the very beginning, the coup of 1989 was only the objective of the West to steal our resources and enslave our country. That was all. Everything is played on resources”.
Călin Georgescu is considered close to Russia, and he has made hostile statements to Romania's partners on several occasions, with statements such as “The Deveselu shield is a diplomatic shame”.
Călin Georgescu also declared that “Zelea Codreanu fought for the morality of the human being”.
After these statements, the General Prosecutor's Office notified ex officio and opened a criminal case against Călin Georgescu.
Also, the co-president of AUR, Claudiu Târziu, announced that Călin Georgescu's statements about Ion Antonescu and Corneliu Zelea Codreanu affected the image of the party, which “was already symbolically charged with a certain position” and delimited itself from these statements.
Marshal Ion Antonescu was sentenced to death in 1946 by the People's Court and shortly afterwards executed. In 2008 the High Court of Cassation and Justice put an end to the legal procedures by which the marshal could have been rehabilitated. Corneliu Zelea Codreanu was also convicted, officially. Promoting their image is, according to current laws, punishable by up to 5 years in prison.
“Promoting the cult of persons guilty of committing a crime against peace and humanity or promoting fascist, racist or xenophobic ideology, through propaganda, by any means, in public, is punishable by imprisonment from 6 months to 5 years and the prohibition of certain rights”. it is specified in article 5 of the Emergency Ordinance 31/2002.
Praised in sites close to Moscow
In June 2016, a laudatory opinion was published on the Sputnik.md website addressed to Călin Georgescu, signed by Ilie Catrinoiu (see the picture above).
That site was put on the “black list” of sites that promote Moscow's propaganda and interests, which is why access to it was closed or restricted, depending on the area. Ilie Catrinoiu was on the list of participants in the Bucharest book launch, in 2017, of Alexandr Dughin.
Dughin is considered close to Putin, being an ardent militant of “Eurasianism”, that is, of the philosophical-geopolitical current according to which the only healthy alternative to the “decadent West” is the region formed by the Russian Federation, the Central Asian states and China.
