“We make a democratic appeal to Marcel Ciolacu to admit his defeat / We will campaign like we have never done in our lives”

USR representatives announced, Monday morning, at 08:30, that Elena Lasconi entered the second round of the presidential elections, according to the party's parallel counting. Elena Lasconi was not present at the press statements on Monday morning, but her colleagues announced that she would make statements later:

UPDATE 09:20 Ionuț Moșteanu declared that “there will be about 2000 votes” in front of Marcel Ciolacu, according to the parallel counting of the party in the last sections:

  • “Elena managed to unite a lot of people, especially lately (…) She will be the president of Romania,” said Moșteanu, who added that Lasconi “won the hearts of the Romanians.”

Moșteanu said that USR knows in each section how many votes each candidate obtained, but that these have not yet been updated by AEP. Moșteanu also said that Lasconi is missing because he is resting a few hours before the statements.

  • “Based on the parallel counting, Romania has a chance for a new beginning: Elena Lasconi entered the second round with a few thousand votes in front of Marcel Ciolacu (…) We make a democratic appeal to Marcel Ciolacu to admit his defeat”, he said Cristian Seidler.

Cătălin Drula, the former USR president whom Elena Lasconi replaced, said that it is “a result that obliges us”: “We will be able to give hope to Romania in the second round”.

Dominic Fritz emphasized that Lasconi united the party and managed to defeat PSD as well:

  • “The joy comes with a shock for millions of Romanians who see that in the second round we find a candidate who is on the face of Vladimir Putin, wants us to leave the EU, has fascist and anti-Semitic theories (…) We take this danger, this responsibility seriously” .
