Călin Georgescu, an independent candidate in the presidential elections of November 2024, managed to capture the attention of public opinion by obtaining an unexpected result of 16% of the votes cast, according to exit polls.
Who is Călin Georgescu?
Born in Bucharest on March 26, 1962, Călin Georgescu began his career in the academic field, graduating from the Land Reclamation College of the “Nicolae Bălcescu” Institute of Agronomy, specializing in pedology (soil study).
He worked as an expert in sustainable development, was state secretary in the Ministry of the Environment and director of a department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and from 2013 he was appointed director of the European Research Center of the Club of Rome
Five times – in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2020 – his name appeared on the short list of possible premiers. In 2020, he was proposed as premier by the AUR and became honorary president of the formation. He clashed with Simion and was expelled
In 2022, in an interview he stated that the legionnaire leader Corneliu Zelea Codreanu and Ion Antonescu did “good deeds too”. A criminal case was opened against him for promoting the personality cult of some people suspected of genocide.

Călin Georgescu's electoral program is called “Food, Water, Energy”, and he claims that it is “a return to the roots of the Romanian nation”.
