NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte traveled to Florida yesterday for a conversation with incoming US President Donald Trump. A NATO spokesperson confirmed this. They talked about “global security issues facing the alliance.”
What else was discussed has not been disclosed. A photo has been released showing Rutte and Trump shaking hands with broad smiles. At the beginning of this month, Rutte announced that he would like to discuss the increasing threat from Russia, Iran, China and North Korea.
Rutte also said that he had had brief contact with Trump after Trump’s election victory. He said he was looking forward to the collaboration and that the collaboration went well during the first four years that Trump was president – Rutte was prime minister at the time.
Rutte flew to the US on the Dutch government plane. The flight was paid for by NATO.
Critical of NATO
It is no secret that Trump is critical of NATO. For example, he has repeatedly said that many member states contribute too little and even threatened to leave the alliance during his first period as president.
The two already met in 2019. As Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Rutte visited Trump at the White House.
