Leafs prospect Easton Cowan scores Kuznetsov-like shootout goal

Easton Cowan’s performance last night was a good reminder of why the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and its fan base are so excited about him.

Cowan has been regarded as one of the Leafs’ top prospects ever since he was selected 28th overall in the 2023 draft, and the leaps he’s made since that time have been truly remarkable.

While Cowan has impressed in many areas, his high-end skill is what most excites Leafs fans. Last night, he demonstrated that raw ability in the shootout against the Owen Sound Attack.

As theScore’s Kyle Cushman mentioned, this isn’t Cowan’s first time coming in that slow in a shootout. Earlier this year, he showed the same patience in a goal at the Leafs development camp.

Cowan doesn’t impress in just the shootout, as he’s already up to 14 goals and 24 points through only 17 games. Those numbers come following a 2023-24 season in which he had already managed 96 points in 54 games, along with an additional 34 in 18 playoff outings.

Cowan’s most impressive stat is that, with two assists in the eventual win over the Attack last night, he extended his regular-season point streak to a shocking 53 games. He’s now just two games shy of the all-time OHL record, which former Leaf Doug Gilmour set with the Cornwall Royals.

Though Cowan is still just 19 years old, it’s clear why Leafs fans are so excited about his playing future.
