This is how the first run went:
Noël impressively demonstrated his self-confidence in the second slalom of the winter. The Frenchman had no problems at all with the icy slope and, like his victory in Levi a week ago, is leading after the first run.
While the Olympic champion in the far north only had two hundredths of a reserve over second-placed Loïc Meillard after half his time, in the Ötztal he put 88 hundredths or more between himself and the competition. Norwegian Atle Lie McGrath and Noël’s compatriot Steven Amiez were the only ones who lost less than a second to the leader.

Despite not having a flawless ride, Tanguy Nef was the best Swiss in 9th place. The man from Geneva confirmed his good form – in Levi he achieved the best result of his career with 5th place. He lost 1.45 seconds to Noël. Meillard, third in the first race of the season, didn’t really get going and is just 1.8 seconds behind in 14th place. Daniel Yule (21st) and Luca Aerni (23rd) qualified for the final of the best 30 drivers, as did Ramon Zenhäuser, who will open the second run. As in Levi, Marc Rochat was eliminated.

The demanding slope claimed other prominent victims. Manuel Feller, who won the premiere in Gurgl a year ago, was eliminated for the third time in the third race of the season. The two returnees Lucas Braathen and Marcel Hirscher also didn’t make it to the finish. While it was the first disappointment after his comeback for the neo-Brazilian, it was another setback for Hirscher after he failed to qualify for the second run in Levi in 46th place. (riz/sda)
