The historian and resistance fighter Marc Bloch will enter the Pantheon

Marc Bloch was the embodiment of the patriot. Born in Lyon in 1886, he grew up in an Alsatian Jewish family who chose France. His destiny, like that of all those of his generation, threw him twice into war. At 28 years old, from Normale and history professor, Marc Bloch fought in the trenches of the 1914 war. Wounded in combat, he subsequently became an intelligence agent. From 1919 to 1936, this great academic taught medieval history at the University of Strasbourg. For his students, he is Captain Bloch.

He was 53 years old when the Second World War broke out. Then father of six children, he recommits to protect his country. Marc Bloch saw the capitulation of France as a tragedy. “He is someone who is a victim of the Vichy regime since he is dismissed by anti-Semitic laws, he is deprived of his status as a civil servant.” indicates Yohann Chapoutot, professor of history at the University of the Sorbonne. Captain Bloch embraces the cause of resistance. He was arrested in 1944 and then interned in Montluc prison like a certain Jean Moulin. Marc Bloch was tortured for days before being executed by the Gestapo on June 16, 1944.
