The 230 kilo shell was discovered on the construction site of a new district of Annecy on October 22. Research showed that the bomb was dropped on May 10, 1944, on a factory and remained buried for more than 80 years.

Nearly 4,000 residents evacuated

After its discovery, the device was reburied under several tons of sand, while the mine clearance operation took place, as reported by our colleagues.

No less than 3,800 residents were evacuated this Sunday morning to allow professionals to work on defusing the bomb. The operation should last all day in the Haute-Savoie prefecture.
