Starting from pole, George Russell claimed the third victory of his Formula 1 career by winning the Las Vegas Grand Prix ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton.
The 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix offered an exceptional spectacle. George Russell emerged as boss, while Lewis Hamilton shone to complete a Mercedes double. Max Verstappen, fifth, wins his fourth F1 world title.
Explosive start: Russell maintains the advantage
From the start, George Russell defended his pole position perfectly. Behind him, Charles Leclerc took risks by diving on the inside at the first corner, passing Carlos Sainz and Pierre Gasly to move into second position.
Max Verstappen, who started fifth, already had the world title in hand in this configuration. The Red Bull driver quickly gained a place by overtaking Gasly on lap four, moving into fourth. At the front, Leclerc attempted a daring overtake on Russell in the last corner, but without success.
These intense efforts cost the Monegasque dearly: overtaken by Sainz then by Verstappen, Leclerc fell back to fourth position, his starting place. Rapid tire degradation forced him to make an early stop on lap nine, as did Lando Norris.
After ten laps, Russell led from Sainz, Verstappen, Gasly and Hamilton, while Norris and Tsunoda completed the top 8.
Hamilton in attack mode
The race took a dramatic turn for Pierre Gasly on lap 14, his engine failing as he chased big points. Meanwhile, Russell consolidated his lead, but fifth-placed Hamilton increased the pressure on Leclerc and Sainz with a blistering pace.
After halfway, Lewis Hamilton went on the offensive. On lap 28, he overtook Max Verstappen on track, taking second place behind an untouchable George Russell. Strategy problems at Ferrari, notably a mix-up with Sainz, further complicated the situation for the Scuderia.
Imperial Russell, sacred Verstappen
Despite Hamilton's impressive comeback, George Russell maintained a comfortable lead to secure a resounding victory. Behind, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc overtook Verstappen in the final laps, giving Ferrari a double podium.
George Russell crossed the finish line as the winner, followed by Lewis Hamilton. Carlos Sainz completes the podium, while Max Verstappen, fifth, celebrates his fourth consecutive world title. A historic evening for F1 and promising prospects for Mercedes and Ferrari.
