In the space of half-time, Argentina was scattered like a puzzle by a remarkably efficient French XV. The Blues of Fabien Galthié almost signed 40 perfect minutes, killing almost all suspense (30-9, Editor's note) in a warmed up Stade de France despite a temperature of around 2-3 degrees Celsius. A 37-23 success which was clearly built on this first act during which the Tricolores were surgical.
“We wanted to prevent them from entering our 22 meters, an area where they are very strong. But we have not always succeeded. When France enters the 22, they are hard to stop. The Blues were pragmatic, unlike us,” admitted Argentina coach Felipe Contepomi.
Realism versus indiscipline
This realism is symbolized by 3 tries from Flament, Villière and penalty. The latter following an inspiration from Dupont and a brilliant kick from Ramos for Bielle-Biarrey, the Bordelais being prevented from scoring by an anti-play gesture from a Pumas.
“They took every opportunity. There are some very big individuals in this team. If you give space to Ramos for example, it’s hard,” analyzed Contepomi.
Suffering from the debates, Argentina fell into l’indiscipline. His two yellow cards in the first act cost a total of 17 points. Too much. “These boxes are really expensive for us,” lamented Contepomi. “We stayed with fourteen too long and against France, it’s too difficult.”
“One of the best teams in the world”
In the space of 5 months, the French and the Argentines faced each other 3 times. For a favorable record of 2 victories to 1 for the Blues. And if during the summer the XV of France was reshuffled, the Pumas repeatedly recognize that the tricolor strategy and philosophy remain the same.
“The 3 matches are similar, France thrives on its individualities, we were unable to counter them,” conceded hooker and captain Julian Montoya. The latter, just like Contepomi, then reached the same conclusion: “The XV of France is one of the best teams in the world”.
