His proximity to the enemy is not to everyone's taste… François Ozon adapts a play by Maurice Rostand (already brought to the screen by Ernst Lubitch, in 1932) for a sensitive reflection around mourning, lies and resilience. Filmed in beautiful black and white and nicely performed, special mention to Paula Beer, this work nevertheless suffers from a slight side of stylistic exercise which undermines the sincerity that is played out on the screen.
